Online Security vs Privacy: For Beginners

Security and privacy are related, but they are not the same. Privacy is your right to control personal information and how it is used. Security is the protection that keeps that information from being stolen or altered.

The difference in practice

  • Privacy weak, security strong: a site sells your data to third parties you agreed to in a policy you did not read.
  • Both weak: a breach puts that data on underground markets.
  • Both strong: the organization collects only what it needs and protects it.

What to do

  • Unique passwords per site; lock the phone
  • Limit what you post on social media
  • Use a VPN on untrusted networks
  • Keep devices patched with firewall and antivirus where they apply
